The scientific name Theobroma cacao means “food of the gods”. The tree itself is unusual: its small flowers grow directly on the trunk and large branches, a phenomenon known as cauliflory.
Inside the ripe fruit, cocoa seeds sit closely together, surrounded by white fruit pulp. After fermentation, drying, roasting and grinding, these seeds become the foundation of chocolate.
